Why Do Sporting Records Keep Falling? Technology, Talent Pools and Diminishing Returns

The marathon world record has fallen by about twenty-five minutes since 1908. The mile has come down by seventeen seconds. In the pool, a time that would have won Olympic gold in 1972 would not now qualify a schoolgirl for a national final. Human bodies have not changed in a century, so the improvement comes from everywhere else, and in several sports it has already begun to flatten in a way that suggests the curve is approaching something.
The talent pool
The single largest factor is that far more people now compete. A record is the best performance by anyone who has tried, so it depends on how deep the population of triers is, and that population has grown through several routes at once: a world population roughly quadrupling over the period, the entry of women into competition on anything like equal terms, the end of formal and informal exclusions by race and class, the professionalisation that allows an athlete to train rather than work, and the globalisation of individual sports so that a talent born in Kenya, Jamaica or Ethiopia can now be found and funded. The effect is visible in which sports improved fastest, since events with the widest participation have advanced most, and in the concentration of running records in a handful of regions where the sport carries the most local prestige and the most systematic identification of young talent.
The equipment
Technology contributes unevenly and sometimes abruptly, which is why governing bodies regulate it:
- •Track surfaces, which moved from cinder to synthetic in the 1960s and have since been tuned for energy return, worth a measurable amount over any distance
- •The fibreglass pole, introduced around 1960, which raised the pole vault record by roughly a metre within a decade and made all earlier marks incomparable
- •Polyurethane swimsuits, which produced an extraordinary 43 world records at the 2009 world championships and were banned the following year, leaving a set of records that stood untouched for a decade
- •Carbon-plated running shoes with compliant foam midsoles, introduced in 2016, which independent studies estimate improve running economy by around four percent and which coincided with a sudden cluster of records at every road distance
- •Bicycles, skis, javelins and bobsleighs, all of which have been redesigned and then restricted, with the javelin's centre of gravity moved in 1986 specifically because throws were reaching the far end of stadiums
- •Timing itself, since hand timing flattered sprint records until electronic timing arrived, which is why pre-1977 marks are not directly comparable
Everything around the athlete
Training has been transformed by knowledge that did not exist. Periodisation, the systematic structuring of a season into blocks with different objectives, is a twentieth-century invention. Altitude training, lactate testing, power sensors on bicycles, video analysis and continuous physiological monitoring give feedback that a 1950s athlete could not obtain at any price. Nutrition has moved from folklore to measurement, with carbohydrate loading, hydration strategy and recovery timing all studied in controlled trials. Sports medicine has extended careers dramatically, since surgeries that ended careers in 1970 now cost a season. Money underlies all of it: a full-time athlete with a coaching team, a physiotherapist and a sports scientist is a recent phenomenon in most sports, and the amateurism rules that prevented it were abandoned by the Olympics only in the 1980s. Pacing technology has made its own contribution, with light systems on track rails and rotating pacemakers in road races removing the tactical caution that once kept times slow.
The awkward part
Doping is a factor of unknown size and it cannot be ignored in any honest account. Several world records set in the 1980s, particularly in women's sprints and throws, have stood for forty years in a period when almost everything else has improved, which is a pattern with an obvious explanation and no way to prove it case by case. State-organised programmes in East Germany are documented in detail from the country's own archives. The response has included the biological passport, the reanalysis of stored samples and, in athletics, a formal debate in 2017 about resetting all records set before a date at which samples were reliably stored, a proposal that was not adopted. Where records from a suspect era stand, they distort the picture of how fast performance is really improving, since the honest curve is steeper than it appears in events where the old mark was not clean.
The ceiling
Improvement is slowing, and in several events it has effectively stopped. Analyses of the full history of world records, including a widely cited 2010 study by French researchers covering 147 events, find that most follow a curve approaching an asymptote, with about half of all record progression having occurred before 1970 and the annual rate of improvement now close to zero in many disciplines. Some records are extremely old: the women's 800 metres mark dates from 1983 and the men's discus from 1986. The physiological limits are real, since oxygen delivery, tendon strength and thermoregulation all cap what a body can do, and the remaining gains come increasingly from equipment and from finding the rare individual whose proportions suit an event perfectly. The likely future is a pattern of long plateaus interrupted by technological jumps, which is what the shoe and swimsuit episodes look like, and which puts governing bodies in the position of deciding how much of a sport's progress should come from engineering.
The takeaway
Records fall mainly because the pool of people competing has grown enormously, through population, professionalisation, the inclusion of women and the globalisation of individual sports, and because training, nutrition, medicine and equipment have all improved. Technology contributes in sudden jumps, as polyurethane swimsuits and carbon-plated shoes both showed before regulators responded. Doping distorts several old marks that have stood for forty years, and the overall rate of improvement is now approaching zero in many events.
