Why Is It Hard to Proofread Your Own Writing? You Read the Meaning, Not the Page

You read a paragraph four times, send it, and the error is in the first line. This is not carelessness and it is not a matter of trying harder. Reading is a prediction process rather than a scanning process, and when you wrote the text yourself you already know what it should say, which means your brain supplies the intended version over the top of the actual one.
Reading is not looking
The eye does not sweep smoothly along a line. It jumps in saccades, brief movements of several characters, and takes in information only during the fixations between them, with clear detail confined to a small region and the rest degrading rapidly towards the periphery. Within that constraint, comprehension works largely by prediction: the brain generates expectations about what comes next from context, grammar and frequency, and uses the visual input to confirm or correct them rather than to build the sentence from scratch. That is why common words are frequently skipped entirely, why reading speed rises with familiarity, and why a sentence can be understood from a partial view. It is also exactly why proofreading fails, since the process is optimised to reach meaning as fast as possible and treats the precise letters as a means rather than the object of interest.
Why your own text is worse
Several effects compound when the writer and the proofreader are the same person:

- •Familiarity from rereading makes the passage feel processed, and that fluency is misread as a signal that it has been checked

The techniques that work all share one feature: they interfere with the automatic prediction so that the eye is forced to take in the actual marks. Changing the presentation does this cheaply, by altering the typeface, the size, the column width or the screen, since the text is then unfamiliar as an image even though it is familiar as content. Printing it out works for the same reason and adds the benefit of a different reading posture. Reading aloud slows the process to the speed of speech and recruits a different pathway, which catches missing words and clumsy constructions that the eye glides over. Reading backwards, sentence by sentence from the end, destroys the context prediction depends on and is effective for spelling and typography while useless for sense. Waiting matters, since a day or two erodes the memory of the intended text. And having someone else read it remains the most effective single measure, because they have no intended version to superimpose.
Where machines help and where they do not
Automated checking catches a specific class of error well and creates a new failure mode. Spelling checkers reliably find non-words and are blind to real words in the wrong place, which is the category human proofreading is also worst at, so the two fail together rather than covering each other. Grammar and style tools catch agreement errors, duplicated words and some punctuation problems, and they also generate false positives confidently, flagging correct constructions and recommending changes that damage meaning, which produces a second problem: automation complacency, the well-documented tendency to trust an automated check and reduce one's own vigilance, so that errors the tool misses are less likely to be caught than if no tool had been used. The practical conclusion is that a checker is a filter rather than a proofreader, that the final pass should still be done by a person under conditions that break the prediction loop, and that the most reliable arrangement remains a second person who has never seen the text.
