Beavers build dams to create deep water they can escape into, and the consequences reach far beyond the animals themselves. They change rivers so thoroughly that they are now used deliberately as a management tool.
What the animal is actually after
A beaver is slow and vulnerable on land and fast and safe in water, so the whole construction effort serves one purpose, which is to create enough deep water to live in safely. The lodge is entered underwater, so the pond must be deep enough that those entrances stay below the surface and below the ice in winter. Food is stored underwater as a cache of branches, accessible when the surface is frozen. Deep water also allows the animal to float heavy timber rather than dragging it. Canals are dug out from the pond to reach trees further away, extending the safe range. The dam exists to create and maintain that depth, and it is maintained continuously in response to the sound of running water.
How the structure is built
The method is consistent and effective:

What the pond does to the river

Sediment settles in the pond rather than being carried on, which clears the water below. Groundwater is recharged as the raised pond pushes water into the surrounding ground, wetting a much larger area than the pond itself. Trees killed by flooding become standing deadwood used by birds and insects. The pond, the wet margin and the eventual meadow left when a dam fails support very different communities, so a valley with beavers holds more kinds of habitat than one without.
How the animals are built for it
The anatomy is specialised for the work in ways worth listing. The incisors grow continuously and carry a hard orange iron-rich enamel on the front face only, so the softer material behind wears faster and the edge is resharpened by use. The jaw muscles are enormous relative to the animal. Lips close behind the teeth, allowing gnawing and carrying underwater without water entering the mouth. The nostrils and ears seal shut on submerging, and a transparent membrane covers the eye. The tail stores fat, steers, props the animal while it gnaws, and slaps the water as an alarm. Body oil waterproofs the fur, which traps air and provides both insulation and buoyancy. A special split claw is used to comb that oil through.
Why they are being reintroduced
Animals hunted nearly to extinction across Europe and heavily reduced in North America are now being returned deliberately, and the reasoning is practical rather than sentimental. Flood management is the strongest argument, since a series of these structures in a headwater catchment delays and spreads a flood peak in a way that costs nothing to build and maintains itself. Drought resilience follows from the same water storage. Water quality improves as sediment and nutrients settle. Biodiversity gains are substantial and well documented. Against that, the animals flood roads, fields and forestry, block culverts and fell valued trees, and the conflicts are real, so reintroduction programmes are accompanied by devices that keep water at a chosen level and by compensation arrangements for landowners.
