What Is a Territory? Defended Space and What It Costs to Hold

A territory is an area an animal defends against others, which is different from a home range, meaning the area it simply uses. The distinction matters because defence is expensive, and an animal only pays that cost when the resource inside is worth defending and can be defended.
When defence is worth it
Economic models of territoriality predict when an animal should defend an area and when it should not, and the predictions hold up reasonably well. Defence costs time, energy and risk of injury, and it delivers exclusive access to whatever is inside. That trade is favourable when the resource is dense enough to be worth having, predictable enough in space to be worth guarding, and distributed in a way that makes exclusion feasible. Resources that are too scarce make defence unprofitable, since the animal would spend more than it gains. Resources that are too abundant make it unnecessary, since there is enough for everyone. Resources that move unpredictably, including many insect swarms and fish shoals, cannot be defended at all. Those predictions are tested most cleanly in nectar-feeding birds, where experiments varying the richness of flowers have shown individuals switching between defending and not defending exactly as the model predicts, which is a satisfying case of behaviour tracking arithmetic.
How boundaries are advertised
Fighting over every boundary would be ruinous, so most territorial signalling is designed to avoid combat:
- •Song, which announces occupancy across a distance, identifies the singer and signals condition, and which is most of what the dawn chorus is doing
- •Scent marking with urine, faeces or specialised glands, which persists in the owner's absence and can convey identity, sex, condition and how recently the owner passed
- •Visual displays and postures at boundaries, which escalate in stages so that either party can withdraw before contact
- •Physical marks including scratched trees, flattened vegetation and dung piles placed conspicuously
- •Patrolling, which refreshes marks and detects intruders, and which consumes a substantial share of an animal's time in many species
- •Dear enemy recognition, where established neighbours respond less aggressively to each other than to strangers, because a known neighbour with a known boundary is less threatening than an unknown animal seeking a vacancy
The variety of arrangements
Territoriality takes many forms and the differences correspond to what is being defended. All-purpose territories contain feeding, nesting and mating resources together, which is the familiar songbird pattern. Breeding territories contain only a nest site, with feeding done elsewhere, which is why seabird colonies consist of thousands of tiny territories a beak's length across. Feeding territories are held only while a food source lasts, sometimes for hours. Leks are display territories containing no resources at all, where males hold small patches purely to be assessed by visiting females. Group territories are defended collectively, as in wolves, lions, chimpanzees and many social birds, which permits defence of areas no individual could hold. Some species are territorial only in certain seasons, and some individuals in a population are territorial while others adopt alternative tactics, floating between territories or attempting to sneak matings, which persists because the alternative pays off often enough.
What it does to populations
Territoriality regulates numbers in a way that few other behaviours do. If territories have a minimum viable size, then an area supports a maximum number of them, and animals unable to secure one become floaters, which do not breed and suffer higher mortality. That produces a surplus population that is invisible in counts of breeding pairs and that fills vacancies quickly when an owner dies, a mechanism demonstrated by removal experiments in which territory holders are taken away and replaced within days by animals that were present all along. For conservation it means habitat quantity translates fairly directly into population size, and that improving habitat quality can increase density only until territory size reaches its floor. For management of species regarded as pests, it explains why culling frequently fails, since removing territory holders creates vacancies that floaters fill, and can in some species disrupt stable social arrangements in ways that increase movement and disease transmission, which has been a central argument in disputes over badger culling and rabies control.
