Why concealment works
Birds respond to the shape, the movement and in many cases the gaze of a person, and a structure that hides all three removes the reason to flee. What matters is breaking the outline rather than being genuinely invisible, since animals habituate to a fixed object that never behaves threateningly, and a structure left in place for weeks becomes part of the landscape. That habituation is why a permanent installation works far better than a person crouching behind a bush, and why animals will feed, preen and breed within metres of one. Movement visible through an opening destroys the effect immediately, which is why the openings are small and why the interior is dark.
What the design has to get right

Automated cameras and microphones have replaced human observers for many purposes, and the underlying principle is identical, since a camera on a post is a concealed observer that never moves.
How to use one properly
Conduct inside determines how much anybody sees, and a few habits make the difference. Arriving quietly and closing the door without letting it bang avoids clearing the area for everybody already inside. Sitting still for several minutes before expecting anything allows the birds to resume after the disturbance of arrival. Keeping hands, lenses and clothing behind the line of the opening prevents a moving silhouette. Speaking quietly rather than not at all is sufficient, since a steady low sound matters far less than a sudden one. Opening only the flaps in use keeps the interior dark. And sharing what is present with others rather than occupying a position silently is the convention everywhere.
The disturbance question
Providing access to wildlife inevitably affects it, and how much is a live question in conservation. Concentrating visitors at a structure protects the rest of a site, since people who would otherwise walk the shoreline sit still in one place, which is the main argument for building them. Against that, a structure attracts people to a spot where they would not otherwise go, footpaths to it fragment habitat, and the presence of any people at all raises the alert level of some species measurably. Breeding birds are more sensitive than wintering ones. Managers address this by closing structures seasonally, by screening approaches, by placing them where the birds already tolerate activity, and occasionally by removing one.
