Why Do Birds Replace Their Feathers? Wear That Cannot Be Repaired

A feather is dead once grown and cannot be mended, so every bird replaces its plumage on a schedule. Fitting that expensive process around breeding and migration constrains the whole annual cycle.

Why it is necessary

A feather is produced by living tissue in a follicle and is dead material once complete, like hair or a fingernail, so damage to it is permanent. Feathers abrade against vegetation, are degraded by sunlight, are chewed by parasites and simply wear out, and a worn flight feather costs efficiency while worn body feathers cost insulation and waterproofing. The only remedy is replacement, which means pushing the old feather out as a new one grows from the same follicle. That is expensive, since feathers are protein and a full set represents a substantial fraction of a bird's body weight, and it is disruptive, since a bird missing flight feathers flies less well and one missing body feathers loses heat.

How the process is managed

Birds schedule and sequence moult to limit the cost:

  • Most species replace flight feathers gradually in a set sequence, keeping enough to fly throughout
  • The sequence is symmetrical between the two wings, which preserves balance
  • Ducks, geese and several other groups moult all flight feathers at once and are flightless for weeks
  • Those species moult where they are safe, which is why flocks gather in remote wetlands to do it
  • Many species have a complete moult after breeding and a partial one before it
  • Timing is controlled by day length acting through hormones

Why plumage changes appearance

Seasonal differences in how birds look come from two quite different mechanisms and distinguishing them explains a great deal. A partial moult before breeding replaces body feathers with more conspicuous ones, which is why several species look transformed in spring. Alternatively, the same feathers change appearance by wearing, since the dull tips of feathers grown in autumn abrade away over winter to reveal brighter colour beneath, which achieves a seasonal change without growing anything and is used by starlings and several finches. Age is also readable, since young birds frequently retain juvenile feathers of a different pattern alongside replaced adult ones, and identifying that mixture is how ringers age birds in the hand.

How a feather grows

The growth process explains why the timing is so constrained. A new feather develops inside a sheath that emerges from the follicle, pushing the old feather out, and it grows from the base so the tip is completed first and the shaft last. Blood supplies the growing feather through the shaft, which is why a developing feather is called a blood feather and why breaking one bleeds substantially while breaking a finished one does not. Growth takes days to weeks depending on the size of the feather, with large flight feathers taking longest. The rate depends on nutrition, and a period of poor feeding leaves a narrow weakly formed band across every feather growing at the time, which is permanent and which lets a bird's condition during moult be read from its plumage afterwards.

The scheduling problem

Moult, breeding and migration all demand energy and cannot overlap comfortably, which forces choices that differ between species. Most temperate birds breed, then moult, then migrate, which compresses everything into a short season. Some migrate first and moult on the wintering grounds where food is more reliable. Some suspend moult partway, halting it for the migration and resuming afterwards, which leaves a visible gap in the feather sequence that can be read later. Species with long migrations and short seasons are the most constrained. Failure to complete a moult leaves a bird with worn feathers for an extra year, which is measurably costly, and adverse conditions during moult produce weak bars across the feathers that record the stress permanently.
