What Is a Duet? Two Birds Singing a Coordinated Song Together

Paired birds in several species sing alternating parts so precisely interleaved that a listener hears one song. The coordination is remarkable, it is commonest in tropical species, and what the birds are doing with it is genuinely disputed.

What they do

Duetting pairs produce songs in which each bird contributes distinct parts, and in the most precise cases the contributions alternate within a fraction of a second so that the result sounds continuous and a listener assumes a single bird. Some species have fixed sequences where each bird knows which phrases are theirs and slots them into gaps left by the partner. Others are looser, with overlapping rather than interleaving. The precision achieved in the tightest examples has been measured and is extraordinary, with response times shorter than the birds could achieve by reacting to what they hear, which implies that each is anticipating the partner rather than responding, and neurological work on one species has found paired activity consistent with each bird holding a representation of the joint song.

The proposed functions

Several explanations have support and the balance differs between species:

  • Mate guarding, where answering the partner immediately prevents a rival responding first and establishes the pair bond to any listener

Why mainly in the tropics

Duetting is concentrated in tropical species and the distribution needs explaining. Tropical birds are more likely to hold territories year round rather than seasonally, to remain paired across years rather than for one season, and to have both sexes singing rather than the male alone, and each of those conditions makes a joint signal useful. Temperate species with seasonal territories and migratory habits have less need for a continuous joint signal, and the sex difference in singing is more pronounced. The correlation between year-round territoriality and duetting is documented across many species and is the best available explanation. It also connects to a broader point, since the assumption that only male birds sing derives from temperate species and is substantially wrong globally, with female song being widespread and having been overlooked for a long time.

The species worth hearing

Several species are cited repeatedly in the literature and are worth naming for anyone who wants to hear the effect. Plain-tailed wrens in the Andes sing with several birds contributing alternating syllables, and the neurological study of coordination was done on them. Various African shrikes produce duets so tightly locked that early observers recorded them as one bird and the species as having an unusually complex song. Australian magpie-larks alternate with sub-second precision and are common enough to be heard easily. Siamangs, which are apes rather than birds, duet with an elaborate structure including an inflatable throat sac, and the comparison is instructive because the same explanations are proposed for them. Recordings of all of these are freely available, and hearing one is considerably more convincing than a description.

How it is studied

The research methods are worth describing because the precision required is unusual. Recording both birds separately requires either close microphones on each or an array allowing the source of each sound to be located, since a single recording cannot reliably separate the contributions. Playback experiments present one bird with a recording of its partner's part and measure whether it fills the gaps correctly, which tests whether it knows the joint structure. Removing one bird temporarily and observing what the other does tests whether the song is maintained solo. Tracking which individual sings which phrase over time establishes whether roles are fixed. And comparative work across many species relates duetting to ecology and to social system, which is how the tropical correlation was established. The field has grown considerably as recording and localisation technology improved.
