How Is a Carpet Made by Hand? Tying Millions of Loops One at a Time

A hand-knotted carpet is built by tying short lengths of yarn around warp threads, row by row, with a large piece requiring over a million knots. The knot type and the density determine everything about the result.
How the structure works
A carpet loom holds vertical warp threads under tension, and the weaver ties short pieces of coloured yarn around pairs of those threads, working across a row from one side to the other. After each row of knots, one or more horizontal weft threads are passed across and beaten down firmly with a comb, which locks the knots in place and holds the structure together. The knot ends stand up and become the pile, and they are trimmed level as the work proceeds or at the end. The pattern exists only as the sequence of colours the weaver ties, so the design is built one knot at a time rather than being applied to a finished cloth, which is why hand-knotted work can carry detail that printing cannot match.
The variables that define a carpet
A small number of choices determine what the finished piece is:

What density actually means
Knot count is quoted constantly in the trade and deserves unpacking. Coarse work may run a few dozen knots per square inch and very fine silk work several hundred or more, and since the count is per unit area it scales as the square, so doubling the linear fineness quadruples the number of knots and roughly quadruples the labour. A large finely knotted carpet therefore represents several person-years of work, which is the honest explanation of the prices. Higher density permits curved lines and fine detail that coarse work must render as steps, which is why floral and pictorial designs come from workshop traditions and geometric designs from village and nomadic weaving where the loom and the count suit them. Density alone does not indicate quality, since materials, dyes and design matter at least as much.
Who does the weaving
The labour behind these objects has a social history that the trade rarely advertises. Weaving has been done predominantly by women and frequently by children in producing regions, in workshops and in homes, and child labour in carpet production became a prominent international issue from the 1980s, producing certification schemes intended to verify that pieces were made without it. Village and nomadic weaving was traditionally domestic work fitted around other tasks, with designs carried in memory and varying between families. Workshop production works from a drawn plan read out row by row, which is why fine urban carpets are consistent and village pieces are not. Mechanised production now supplies most of the market, so hand-knotted work competes as a craft product, and the number of weavers has fallen sharply in most producing regions within a generation.
Reading a carpet
Several features distinguish hand-knotted work and are worth knowing. The back of a hand-knotted piece shows the pattern as clearly as the front, since the knots pass through, while machine-made and tufted pieces show a backing material instead. Slight irregularities in line and in colour are expected in hand work, and a colour shift running across the piece indicates a change of dye lot, which is regarded as a feature rather than a fault in traditional weaving. Fringes on a hand-knotted piece are the warp threads themselves and are therefore structural, while sewn-on fringes indicate otherwise. The knot type can be seen by parting the pile. And wear reveals construction, since a hand-knotted carpet worn to the foundation still shows the pattern in the remaining knots.
