How Do You Sell Something With No Fixed Size? Measure the Length Instead

Yarn is sold by weight and used by length, and the relationship between the two is the whole system by which thread thickness is described. The units are old and confusing.
The problem being solved
A thread has no useful dimension that can be measured directly, since it is far too fine to gauge a diameter reliably and it compresses under any instrument. What can be measured accurately is weight and length, and the ratio between them describes the thickness completely, because a finer thread gives more length per unit weight. The whole vocabulary of yarn measurement is therefore built on fixed lengths wound off onto a reel and then weighed, or on fixed weights whose length is counted, and every traditional system is one of those two arrangements.
How the units work
The traditional arrangement measures a fixed length and weighs it:
- •A skein is a set number of turns around a reel of known circumference
- •That gives a defined length, which differs by fibre and by region
- •A larger bundle groups a set number of those
- •The count states how many such lengths make one pound
- •So a higher count means a finer yarn, which is counterintuitive
- •Different fibres use different lengths, so counts are not comparable
Why the systems disagree
Cotton, wool, worsted, linen and silk each developed their own fixed lengths in their own trades and regions, so the same count number describes quite different thicknesses depending on the fibre, and a count with no fibre named is meaningless. That created constant difficulty as trade widened and as mills handled several fibres. The modern replacement runs the other way, stating the weight of a fixed length rather than the length of a fixed weight, which makes a higher number mean a thicker yarn and is consistent across all fibres. Both systems remain in use, which is why yarn specifications still require care.
What the reel actually was
The physical equipment behind the units survives and explains the odd numbers. A hand reel is a frame of a fixed circumference, traditionally a yard and a half in the English wool trade, around which yarn is wound while a counter clicks off the turns, and a mechanical version with a bell that rings after a set number of turns was standard equipment in mills. Winding a set number of turns therefore produces a defined length without anybody measuring anything, which is why the units are built from turn counts rather than from round numbers of yards. The same devices are still made for hand spinners.
Why it still matters to a knitter
The same problem appears in the hand knitting trade under different names and causes the same confusion. Yarn is sold in weights described by words rather than numbers, and those words are not standardised between countries, so the same description covers a noticeably different thickness in different markets. What actually determines the outcome is the number of stitches produced over a measured distance with a given needle, which is why every pattern states that figure and why substituting a yarn without checking it produces a garment of the wrong size. The measurement solves the problem the same way it always did, by relating length to a fixed reference.
