Why Split One Tune Between Two Singers Note by Note? Nobody Has to Breathe

Distributing a single melody between two or more parts so that each supplies only some of the notes produces a line nobody is actually singing, and the technique is far older and wider than the medieval label suggests.

How the technique works

A melodic line is divided so that one voice sounds while the others are silent, alternating rapidly, frequently note by note. No performer plays the tune, and the tune only exists in the ear of a listener assembling the fragments. Each part on its own sounds fragmentary and rhythmically strange, full of rests that make no musical sense in isolation. Heard together the fragments interlock into a continuous line, usually faster and more intricate than any single performer could manage.

What it makes possible

Splitting a line between players removes several physical limits at once:

  • Nobody needs to breathe during their own silences
  • The combined line can move faster than one player could articulate
  • Instruments that sound one note at a time can produce full melodies
  • Rapid changes of timbre become available within a single line
  • Each performer's part is easier than the whole
  • Coordination becomes the difficulty instead

Where the medieval version came from

The technique is documented in European polyphony from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, appearing in Parisian sacred music and then in secular songs and instrumental pieces. It was fashionable enough to be criticised, and a papal document of 1324 complains about music chopped up in this fashion and about what it does to the sacred text, which is one of the better pieces of evidence that the style was widespread. It fell out of use as musical fashion changed in the fifteenth century, and the term survived mainly in histories of the period.

What the word means

The name is medieval Latin and its literal sense is disputed in a way that is quite revealing. It is usually connected to a word for a hiccup, which describes the effect of the rests interrupting the line reasonably well, and a listener hearing the technique for the first time generally reaches for the same comparison. Other suggestions connect it to words for a shock or a jolt. The term appears in theoretical writing of the period rather than in the music itself, which is typical, since composers rarely labelled what they were doing and the names come from the people explaining it afterwards.

Where it is found elsewhere

The same principle appears independently across the world and in most cases has nothing to do with the European tradition. Panpipe ensembles in the Andes divide a melody between players holding alternating notes, so the tune is only playable by the group. Horn ensembles in central Africa do the same, and the practice among pygmy groups in the Congo basin is famous for its complexity. Balinese gamelan interlocks fast parts between paired instruments so precisely that the combined result sounds like one player. Handbell choirs work this way by necessity. Minimalist composers rediscovered it in the twentieth century.
