What Is a Pedal Point? One Held Note Underneath Everything Else

A single note sustained while the harmony above it changes creates tension that resolves when the harmony finally agrees with it. The device is named after the organ, where the feet can hold a note indefinitely while the hands do something else entirely.
How it works
Harmony normally moves as a whole, with every voice changing when a chord changes, and a pedal point breaks that by holding one voice fixed. The held note belongs to the harmony at the start and at the end and does not belong to some of the chords in between, which means those chords are heard as dissonant against it. That dissonance is the point, since it creates an accumulating pressure that the arrival of a consonant chord releases. Why the ear responds to it
Part of the explanation is straightforwardly acoustic and part is about expectation. A sustained low note supplies a reference pitch, and every harmony above it is heard in relation to that reference rather than independently, which is why a chord sequence over a pedal sounds more connected than the same sequence without one. Its overtones interact with the notes above, reinforcing some and clashing with others, which produces the characteristic richness. The expectation component matters more, since a dominant pedal works because listeners familiar with the style know what a dominant demands, and the device exploits that knowledge by withholding the resolution. That means the effect depends on stylistic familiarity and is not a universal acoustic fact, though the drone traditions suggest the reference-point function operates more widely. A ground bass is a repeating bass line rather than a single pitch, so the harmony above it is constrained by a pattern instead of anchored to one note. Using it badly
The device has recognisable failure modes that follow from its own logic. Holding a pedal too long exhausts the tension rather than building it, since the ear adjusts and stops hearing the dissonance as pressure, which converts an intensifier into a static drone. Harmony above a pedal must actually move, since a pedal under a stationary chord achieves nothing, and the most effective examples put genuinely remote harmony above the held note. Resolving to the wrong thing wastes the setup, since a long dominant pedal that lands somewhere other than the expected chord can be a deliberate surprise and is more often a failure of nerve. Voicing matters, since a pedal buried in a thick texture is inaudible and does no work, while one too prominent dominates.
