Why Are the Barriers Designed to Fall Over? Somebody Kept Breaking Their Legs

Running while clearing ten barriers is a sprint in which the obstacles are meant to be skimmed rather than jumped, and the barriers themselves tip forward under a set force. Both facts come from a history of serious injuries.

Why it is not jumping

The event is a sprint interrupted, and the technique reflects that entirely. Jumping a barrier means rising, which costs time in the air and costs speed on landing, so the aim is to pass over with the least vertical movement possible, keeping the centre of mass travelling in nearly a straight line. That requires leading with one leg extended flat rather than lifted, folding the trailing leg sideways rather than under, leaning the upper body forward to counterbalance, and landing on the ball of the foot already moving forward. A good clearance raises the athlete by a remarkably small amount, and the fastest athletes lose only a fraction of a second to each barrier.

The rhythm that governs it

Everything about the event follows from the spacing between barriers:

  • Distances are fixed, so the stride pattern between barriers is fixed too
  • Elite men take three strides between barriers in the short race
  • Elite women take three in theirs, and both take eight to the first
  • The lead leg therefore alternates or does not, depending on the pattern
  • Losing the pattern forces stuttering or reaching, which costs far more than a knock
  • Taller athletes may need a different pattern from shorter ones

Why the barriers tip

Early competition used rigid obstacles, frequently fixed sheep hurdles driven into the ground, and hitting one at speed caused serious injury including broken bones, which was common enough to be a recognised hazard of the event. The modern design is weighted so that it stands under its own weight and tips forward when struck with a defined force, which is specified in the rules and checked at competitions, so a runner who clips one knocks it over rather than being stopped by it. Knocking barriers over carries no penalty at all, which surprises spectators, and the only rules are that a runner must not deliberately knock one down, must not trail a leg outside the barrier and must stay in their lane.

The other barrier events

Several related events differ in ways that change the technique entirely. The longer hurdles race spaces the barriers far further apart and is run on a curve, so the athlete must clear them while leaning into the bend and must be able to lead with either leg, since the inside leg cannot trail outside the barrier in a lane. The steeplechase uses heavy immovable barriers and includes a water jump, so the technique involves stepping onto the barrier rather than clearing it and the falls are genuine. Sprint hurdles for women use lower barriers at closer spacing than the men's event. And indoor racing over a shorter distance compresses everything, leaving almost no room between barriers at all.

Where the event came from

The origin is agricultural and the name records it. Nineteenth century English athletics adopted races over obstacles made from the portable wooden hurdles used for penning sheep, driven into the turf at intervals across a field, and the standard distances descend from those arrangements. The awkward metric distances used now are conversions of the original imperial ones. Barrier heights were set relative to the athletes of the period and have barely changed. The steeplechase, run over fixed barriers and a water jump, descends separately from cross country races between church steeples and retains obstacles that do not tip, which is why falls in that event remain spectacular.
