What Is Relief? Sculpture That Stays Attached to Its Background

A relief projects from a surface it remains part of, which puts it between a picture and a statue. That intermediate position gives it possibilities neither has, and it is why the form has been used for narrative across almost every culture.

The degrees

Reliefs are described by how far the forms project and the difference is substantive. High relief projects substantially, with figures standing well clear of the ground and sometimes undercut so that parts are entirely free, which approaches sculpture in the round while remaining attached. Low relief projects slightly, with forms compressed into a shallow depth and depending on outline and on gentle modelling, which approaches drawing. Very low relief compresses the depth almost to nothing while preserving the illusion of full form, which is a specialised technique that survives on coins and was used to remarkable effect in Renaissance carving. Sunk relief cuts the figures into the surface so they do not project at all, which is characteristic of Egyptian exterior carving and which works because strong sunlight throws the incised edges into sharp shadow.

Why it suits narrative

The form has been used to tell stories more than any other sculptural approach:

  • It attaches to architecture, so a sequence can run along a wall, a frieze or a column in the order a viewer walks
  • It permits many figures in a controlled space, which free-standing sculpture does not
  • It allows overlapping and layering, which indicates depth and relationship between figures
  • It survives better than free-standing work, since it cannot fall over and is protected by the structure
  • It can be read from a distance if the projection is deep enough
  • It carries text alongside the images naturally, which is how many historical examples combine the two

The perspective problem

Relief occupies an awkward position regarding depth, since it has real depth and not enough to be literal, so it must suggest more than it has. Different traditions solved that differently, and the solutions are visible. Egyptian and ancient Near Eastern practice used a conventional layering with overlapping figures and registers, making no attempt at continuous space. Classical Greek practice modelled figures naturalistically within a shallow depth and used overlapping and diminishing projection to suggest recession. Renaissance practice imported linear perspective into relief, constructing architectural backgrounds that recede convincingly while the physical depth remains a few centimetres, which produces a genuinely strange object that reads as a deep space and is nearly flat. Each approach is coherent and none is more correct, since the problem has no solution and only treatments.

How one is made

The carving process differs from free-standing sculpture in ways that shape the result. Work proceeds from a flat slab, with the design transferred to the surface and the background cut away progressively, so the carver removes material to a planned depth rather than working around a mass. That means the depth must be decided before anything is cut and cannot be increased later, which is why preparatory drawings and small models matter more here than in work carved in the round. Undercutting, where material is removed beneath a projecting form to free its edge, is the technique that produces deep shadow and apparent detachment, and it is also where a carving is most likely to break. Modelling in clay and casting in metal removes the depth constraint and introduces different ones, which is why cast reliefs frequently show projection that carving could not achieve.

Where it is found

The form is nearly universal and the examples span the range of human building. Egyptian temple and tomb walls carry enormous quantities of carved narrative and text. Assyrian palace reliefs record military campaigns in sequences that run for tens of metres. Greek temple friezes and pediments carried mythological narrative as part of the architecture. Roman triumphal monuments used spiralling reliefs to record campaigns in continuous narrative. Indian temple walls carry dense figurative carving over entire surfaces. Mesoamerican monuments combine image and inscription. Medieval European church doorways and capitals carry narrative for congregations who could not read. Coins, seals and medals are miniature reliefs and are the form most people handle daily. The persistence across unconnected traditions reflects that carving into an architectural surface is the natural way to put images where buildings are.
