Sculpture and 3D Art

Carving, modelling, casting and 3D materials

Sculpture divides cleanly by process: you either take material away, build it up, or make a mould and cast into it - and each imposes different limits.

The unit covers carving, modelling, casting and moulding, assemblage and installation, and the materials used in three-dimensional work.

This unit breaks down into 22 short steps and 132 questions, starting at difficulty 2 and building to 4. Below you can see exactly what it covers, how the path is structured, and worked examples with explanations.

  • Fact or fibLevel 2

    8. Duchamp's artwork 'Fountain' was a readymade made from a urinal.

    Answer: True

In 1917 Duchamp signed and displayed a porcelain urinal as art, titling it 'Fountain'.

  • Fill the blankLevel 2

    9. Everyday items an artist reuses in an assemblage are called ____ objects.

    • foundcorrect
    • frozen
    • molten
    • primary

Found objects are ready-made things collected and combined into assemblage art.

  • Match the pairsLevel 2

    10. Match each sculpture method to what the artist does.

Answer: Carving = Cut material away; Modelling = Build up soft material; Casting = Pour liquid into a mould; Assemblage = Combine found objects

Each method shapes a sculpture differently: you carve, model, cast or assemble.

  • Multiple choiceLevel 2

    11. Assemblage is a kind of sculpture created by doing what?

    • Joining separate objects and parts into one 3D piececorrect
    • Carving one block of stone
    • Pouring bronze into a mould
    • Painting on stretched canvas

Assemblage brings many separate objects together into a single three-dimensional artwork.

  • Odd one outLevel 2

    12. Which of these does NOT describe how assemblage is made?

    • Carving a form from one solid stonecorrect
    • Welding scrap metal together
    • Gluing found objects together
    • Bolting parts onto a base

Assemblage joins separate objects, whereas carving cuts a form from one solid block.

Carving

  • Fact or fibLevel 2

    13. A relief is a carving that stays attached to a flat background.

    Answer: True

In relief carving the design is cut so it projects from a background it remains part of.

  • Fill the blankLevel 2

    14. To carve stone, a sculptor strikes a chisel with a ____.

    • malletcorrect
    • brush
    • kiln
    • needle

A mallet, a hammer-like tool, drives the chisel to chip away the stone.

  • Multiple choiceLevel 2

    15. In sculpture, carving means creating a form by which action?

    • Removing material to reveal a shapecorrect
    • Building up soft material
    • Pouring liquid into a mould
    • Gluing found objects together

Carving is subtractive - the artist cuts and chips material away until the shape appears.

  • Odd one outLevel 2

    16. Which tool is NOT used for carving?

    • Kilncorrect
    • Chisel
    • Gouge
    • Mallet

A kiln is an oven for firing clay, not a carving tool; chisels, gouges and mallets carve.

  • Guess the numberLevel 3

    17. About how many feet tall is Michelangelo's marble statue David?

    Answer: 17 feet

The David stands about 17 feet tall, far larger than a real person.

  • Match the pairsLevel 3

    18. Match each carving term to its meaning.

Answer: Relief = Figures that project from a flat background; In the round = Freestanding and viewable from every side; Subtractive = Made by removing material; Non-finito = Deliberately left unfinished

These terms describe how a carved sculpture is shaped and how it can be viewed.

Casting and Moulding

  • Fact or fibLevel 2

    19. One mould can be used to cast several copies of the same sculpture.

    Answer: True

Because the mould keeps its shape, artists can cast multiple identical copies from it.

  • Fill the blankLevel 2

    20. In casting, the liquid material is poured into a hollow ____.

    • mouldcorrect
    • canvas
    • sketch
    • frame

The mould is the hollow form that shapes the liquid as it hardens.

  • Match the pairsLevel 2

    21. Match each casting word to its meaning.

Answer: Mould = Hollow form the metal fills; Molten = Metal melted into liquid; Alloy = A mixture of metals; Cast = The finished hardened copy

These key terms describe how a molten alloy is poured into a mould to make a cast.

  • Multiple choiceLevel 2

    22. Casting a sculpture means doing which of these?

    • Pouring a liquid into a mould where it hardenscorrect
    • Chipping away at stone
    • Drawing with charcoal
    • Weaving fibres together

In casting, a liquid material is poured into a mould and left to set into a solid shape.

  • Build the sentenceLevel 3

    23. Build a true sentence about Rodin's most famous sculpture.

Answer: The Thinker is cast in bronze

Rodin's 'The Thinker' was cast in bronze, not carved from stone.

  • Guess the numberLevel 3

    24. Bronze is mostly copper mixed with tin. About what percent of bronze is copper?

    Answer: 90 percent

Bronze is roughly 90 percent copper with a smaller amount of tin, which makes it strong for casting.

Modelling

  • Build the sentenceLevel 2

    25. Build a sentence about working with modelling clay.

Answer: Soft clay is easy to shape

Because clay stays soft, an artist can add to it and reshape it easily.

  • Fact or fibLevel 2

    26. When modelling, you can both add material and take some away.

    Answer: True

Modelling is flexible - you can press on more clay or pinch some off at any time.

  • Fill the blankLevel 2

    27. A wire skeleton built inside a clay figure to support it is called an ____.

    • armaturecorrect
    • easel
    • palette
    • kiln

An armature holds the clay up so a tall or thin figure does not collapse.

  • Multiple choiceLevel 2

    28. In sculpture, modelling means creating a form by which action?

    • Building up soft material by adding to itcorrect
    • Cutting material away
    • Pouring metal into a mould
    • Hammering flat sheet metal

Modelling is additive - the artist adds and shapes soft material like clay or wax.

  • Match the pairsLevel 3

    29. Match each clay hand-building technique to what it does.

Answer: Pinch = Squeeze a ball hollow with fingers; Coil = Stack rolled ropes of clay; Slab = Join flat sheets of clay; Score = Scratch edges so pieces stick

Pinch, coil and slab are the main hand-building methods, and scoring helps clay pieces join.

  • Guess the numberLevel 4

    30. A clay sculpture is fired in a kiln to make it hard. About what temperature in degrees Celsius does a pottery kiln reach?

    Answer: 1000 degrees C

Most clay is fired near 1000 degrees Celsius, which turns soft clay into hard, permanent ceramic.

Where these questions come from. Each unit starts as a plan of the concepts it should cover and the difficulty it should span. Questions are written against that plan with AI assistance, then checked by a validator that rejects anything without a single defensible answer, an explanation, or plausible wrong options. How we write questions sets out the whole process, and corrections are fixed in the bank and reach the site and the app the same day.
