What Is a Scavenger? The Animals That Stop the World Filling With Corpses

Every animal that dies must be removed, and scavengers do most of that work faster and more completely than bacteria and insects alone could manage. The service is invisible until it stops, and one region found out what happens when it does.

The specialists and the opportunists

Obligate scavengers, meaning animals that live almost entirely on carrion, are rare among vertebrates and essentially limited to vultures, and the reason is a matter of economics. Finding a carcass requires searching an enormous area, and only an animal that can travel far at very low energy cost can make a living that way, which soaring flight permits and walking does not. Vultures accordingly have long broad wings, exploit thermals to cover hundreds of kilometres without flapping, and have exceptional eyesight, with New World vultures additionally possessing a sense of smell that is unusual among birds and allows them to find carcasses under forest canopy. Most other scavengers are facultative, meaning they take carrion opportunistically alongside hunting or foraging, which describes hyenas, bears, foxes, corvids, gulls, crabs, many fish and a great many insects. The distinction matters ecologically, since obligate specialists remove carcasses quickly and completely while opportunists take what is convenient and leave the rest.

How the equipment works

Living on decaying flesh requires specific adaptations that other animals lack:

  • Extremely acidic stomachs, with vulture gastric acid far stronger than that of most animals, which destroys bacteria including anthrax, botulism and cholera organisms that would kill other consumers
  • Immune adaptations and a gut microbial community tolerant of pathogens that are lethal elsewhere
  • Bare heads and necks in many vulture species, which is generally explained as hygiene when feeding inside a carcass and has also been connected to temperature regulation
  • Powerful bone-cracking jaws in hyenas, which access marrow that nothing else can reach, and a digestive system capable of processing bone
  • Efficient searching, including following other scavengers, so that one bird descending recruits many across a wide area
  • Rapid consumption, since a group of vultures can strip a large carcass within hours, which removes the resource before pathogens multiply in it

The service they provide

Carcass removal is a genuine public health function and its value became measurable when it failed. Vulture populations across the Indian subcontinent collapsed by over ninety-five percent from the 1990s, and the cause was eventually identified as diclofenac, an anti-inflammatory drug given to livestock that proved lethal to vultures feeding on treated carcasses. The consequences were substantial. Cattle carcasses that vultures would have removed within hours instead rotted, feral dog populations rose sharply on the available food, and dog bites and rabies cases increased, with published estimates attributing tens of thousands of additional human deaths to the chain of events and economic costs in the tens of billions of dollars. Carcass disposal became a problem for communities that had never needed to think about it, and the Parsi practice of sky burial, which depends on vultures, was disrupted. The drug was banned for veterinary use in several countries and populations have begun a slow recovery from a very low base.

The rest of the community

Vertebrate scavengers are one part of a succession that processes a carcass. Blowflies arrive within minutes and lay eggs, and the resulting maggot masses consume soft tissue rapidly and generate enough heat to be measurable. Beetles follow in a predictable sequence, with different families arriving as the carcass dries. Bacteria and fungi work throughout. Soil beneath a carcass is enriched enormously and supports a distinct plant and invertebrate community for years afterwards, creating a local hotspot of nutrients. The predictability of that succession is what makes forensic entomology possible, since the species present and their developmental stage estimate how long a body has been dead, which is used in criminal investigation. In the deep sea the equivalent is a whale fall, where a single carcass sinking to the sea floor supports a succession of specialised communities for decades and includes species known from nowhere else, which is the most extreme demonstration that a dead animal is a resource rather than a problem.
