The Feynman Technique: Learn Anything by Explaining It

The physicist Richard Feynman was famous for making hard ideas feel simple. His secret was a habit anyone can copy: to understand something, try to explain it in plain words, as if teaching a curious child. Where you get stuck is exactly where you need to study more.
The idea in one line
If you cannot explain it simply, you do not understand it well enough yet. Fancy words can hide gaps in your knowledge. Plain words expose them, which is precisely what you want while you are still learning.
The four steps
The technique is a short loop you repeat:
- •Pick a topic and write its name at the top of a page.
- •Explain it in simple language, as if to a beginner.
- •Notice where you stumble or reach for jargon. That is your gap.
- •Go back to the source, fill the gap, and explain it again.
Why it works
Explaining forces active recall. You cannot simply recognise the material, you have to produce it and put it in order. It also reveals the difference between knowing a word and knowing an idea. Many people can say mitochondria without being able to explain what it does. The Feynman technique catches that gap instantly.
Best of all, it turns studying into something you make rather than something you passively read. What you build yourself, you remember.
Where people get it wrong
Explaining is not the same as summarising, and the technique fails quietly when the two get confused. A summary can be fluent and empty: it restates the headings in slightly different words and never touches the mechanism. The test of a real explanation is that it survives a chain of why. Why does the heart have four chambers? Why does that matter? Why not two? If the answers run out after one step, you have the words and not the idea.
The instruction to explain as if to a child is also misread as dumbing down. It means no jargon, not less content. A child would ask why at every step, and it is that relentless why, not the simplicity of the vocabulary, that finds the gap.
Use it on the things you feel surest about
The natural instinct is to apply the technique to topics you know you are shaky on, and it works there. But its most valuable use is on the topics you would skip because you feel you know them. That confident feeling is exactly where the illusion of knowing lives, and it is the one place you would never otherwise check.
Write the explanation down rather than saying it. Speaking lets you skate over a gap with a hand gesture and a vague phrase; the page does not. If you cannot write a plain paragraph on it without notes, you do not have it yet, and now you know.
