How Dynamics and Articulation Shape Musical Expression

Play the same melody softly, then play it loudly with sharp, separated notes. The pitches may remain unchanged, yet the character can feel completely different. Dynamics and articulation give performers tools for shaping that difference.
Dynamics control levels and changes of loudness
Dynamics describe how loudly or softly music is performed. Written music often uses Italian terms and abbreviations. Piano means soft, forte means loud and mezzo indicates a middle level. Extra letters can strengthen the instruction, so pianissimo is very soft and fortissimo is very loud.
These markings are relative rather than exact measurements. Forte on a solo flute is not the same physical loudness as forte in a full orchestra. Performers judge the level within the instrument, room, group and musical style. Listening to others is part of following the marking.
Dynamics can also change gradually. A crescendo grows louder, while a diminuendo or decrescendo becomes softer. Gradual change can build expectation, release tension or help a phrase feel as though it is approaching and then moving away. Sudden changes create a different effect, like a door opening in the middle of a quiet room.
Articulation shapes individual notes
Articulation describes how notes are attacked, connected and released. Legato notes flow smoothly into one another. Staccato notes are shortened and separated. An accent gives a note extra emphasis, while tenuto suggests holding a note for its full value with gentle weight.
Different instruments create articulation in different ways. A singer changes breath and consonants. A violinist changes bow movement. A pianist controls the speed and weight of the key press, though the hammer leaves the string quickly. Wind players shape notes with breath and tongue. The physical action differs, but the listener hears the resulting character.
Articulation can clarify rhythm and phrasing. Short notes may make a passage playful or nervous. Smooth notes may feel calm, singing or connected. No marking has one fixed emotion in every piece, because tempo, harmony and context change how it is heard. Articulation also helps performers show where one musical idea ends and another begins. A slight separation can mark a new phrase, while connected notes can carry one breath of thought across several measures. These choices are small on the page but large in the ear.
Listen beyond the pitches
Choose a short piece and focus on expression rather than trying to identify every note:

Reading a score, and the range performers work in
Dynamic markings sit below the stave for most instruments and between the staves for piano, and they are standing instructions rather than isolated events: a marking holds until the next one replaces it, so a single p at the start of a page governs everything that follows. Composers of different periods used the range differently. Baroque scores often carry few markings and rely on the player's judgment and on terraced dynamics, sudden steps between loud and soft rather than gradual change.
Beethoven pushed both ends, writing ppp and fff and sometimes a sudden fp, loud then immediately soft, on a single note. Romantic and modern composers add articulation to almost every note, which is why a Mahler part can look black with instructions. A performer's job is to decide how big the gap between p and f should be in a given room and on a given instrument, and two fine performances of the same page can make opposite choices.
