How the Liver Processes Nutrients and Waste

After nutrients are absorbed from your small intestine, much of that blood travels first to the liver. This organ acts as a chemical processing centre, adjusting substances before they continue around the body. Its jobs include storing energy, changing nutrients, making proteins and helping remove wastes.
The liver receives nutrients from digestion
Blood from much of the digestive system reaches the liver through the hepatic portal vein. This gives liver cells early access to glucose, amino acids and other absorbed substances. The liver can then adjust their concentrations before the blood returns to the wider circulation.
After a carbohydrate-rich meal, blood glucose may rise. The liver can remove some glucose and join many glucose molecules into glycogen for storage. When blood glucose later falls, stored glycogen can be broken down and glucose can be released, helping keep the supply to cells steadier.
The liver also processes fats. It can build, break down and transport different lipid molecules depending on the body's needs. These reactions connect digestion with longer-term energy storage and the construction of cell membranes and other molecules.
Amino acids create a nitrogen problem
Your body uses amino acids to build proteins, but it does not keep a large dedicated store of spare amino acids. When there is more than needed, the liver can remove the nitrogen-containing amino group in a process called deamination.
The nitrogen cannot simply remain as free ammonia because ammonia is toxic. Liver cells convert much of it into urea, a less toxic substance. Urea enters the blood and is carried to the kidneys, where it is filtered and removed in urine.
The remaining parts of amino acids can enter other metabolic pathways. They may be used in respiration or converted into other molecules. This is one example of how the liver connects several nutrient pathways rather than treating carbohydrates, fats and proteins as completely separate systems.
The liver also makes and modifies substances
Liver cells produce bile, which is stored in the gallbladder and released into the small intestine. Bile helps neutralise acidic material arriving from the stomach and breaks large fat droplets into smaller droplets, increasing the surface area available to digestive enzymes.
The liver also makes important blood proteins and modifies many medicines, hormones and other chemicals. Some substances are converted into forms that are easier for the body to remove. This protective role has limits, and high doses of certain chemicals can damage liver cells.
