Space reviews and mix old cards with new ones

Memory strengthens when successful retrieval is repeated across time. Review a new card relatively soon, then let the gap grow as the answer becomes easier. Difficult cards should return sooner. Easy cards can wait longer. This is the basic logic of spaced repetition.

Ten focused minutes of retrieval can be more useful than a long session of reading cards passively while your attention drifts. Flashcards are less suitable when the goal is to produce a long argument, solve a multi-step unfamiliar problem, or interpret a whole source. You can still use cards to learn the building blocks, but pair them with practice questions that require combining ideas. Good studying matches the practice format to the skill you eventually need.
