The 80/20 Rule for Studying

There is never enough time to learn everything, and trying to leaves you tired and behind. The good news is that you rarely need everything. In most subjects, a small part of the material carries most of the weight, and finding that part is half the work.

What the 80/20 rule means

The idea is simple. Roughly 80 percent of your results tend to come from about 20 percent of the material. A handful of core ideas keep showing up, and the rest are details built on top of them.

The numbers are not exact, and you should not treat them as a law of nature. The point is the pattern, not the percentages. Some of what you learn is load-bearing, holding up everything around it, and some of it is decoration. Your job is to tell the difference and reach for the load-bearing parts first.

Most people do the opposite. They start at page one and grind forward evenly, giving a tiny footnote the same care as a central concept. By the time they run low on energy, they have spent it on things that barely matter.

How to find the vital parts

Start by asking what the topic is really about. Skim the chapter titles, the summaries, and any words in bold. Look for the ideas that everything else keeps referring back to, because those are almost always the ones that count.

Past questions are gold here. If a certain concept appears again and again on old exams or worksheets, it is clearly high value. So are the terms your teacher repeats, the steps a worked example cannot skip, and the diagrams that show up in every chapter. Those repeated things are the 20 percent worth your best attention.

Study the heavy hitters first

Once you know the core, spend your freshest, most focused time on it. Learn it well enough to explain it in your own words, not just recognise it when you see it. Real understanding of a few key ideas beats a shaky memory of many.

Only then should you move outward to the finer details. This order protects you, because if you run out of time you have already secured the parts that matter most. A short daily quiz helps too, since it keeps nudging you toward the ideas you get wrong, and those are often the high-value ones hiding in plain sight.

You do not have to learn it all to do well. Find the small slice that carries the topic, master that first, and treat the rest as a bonus you reach if time allows. Studying smart is mostly about choosing what to study before you ever begin.
