What Is Observational Learning? How Watching Others Shapes Behaviour

Observational learning is learning that happens by watching other people and noticing what they do and what follows. You do not always need to perform an action yourself first to learn something about it.
Bandura and social learning theory
Observational learning is often associated with psychologist Albert Bandura and social learning theory. The basic idea is that people can acquire information about actions by observing models, such as parents, teachers, friends, athletes, or characters on a screen. A child may learn how to tie a shoelace by watching a demonstration before trying it. A student may pick up a problem-solving method by seeing a worked example.
Watching alone is not enough for every behaviour to appear. Attention matters first. You have to notice the important parts of what the model is doing. Retention matters next because you need some memory of the sequence. Then you need the physical or mental ability to reproduce it. Motivation affects whether you actually choose to perform what you observed. These steps make observational learning more precise than simply copying.
Observation can also teach you what not to do. If you see someone make a risky choice and experience a negative consequence, you may become less likely to repeat it. This is sometimes called vicarious learning because the consequence happens to another person while you learn from watching.
Models influence learning in different ways
People do not imitate every model equally. You may pay more attention to someone who seems skilled, familiar, respected, similar to you, or relevant to the task. A clear demonstration also helps because the important movement or decision is easier to see. That is why teachers often break a complex skill into visible steps rather than performing the whole thing at full speed.
Consequences matter too. If a model receives praise or another reward after an action, observers may become more interested in trying it. If the model is corrected or the action clearly fails, the behaviour may become less attractive. Still, observation does not control behaviour mechanically. Your own goals, beliefs, past experience, and social setting also shape what you do.
This is a useful part of observational learning because it explains why two people can watch the same example and learn different lessons. One person may focus on the technique, another on the outcome, and another on a social cue the first two barely noticed.
How to use observational learning when studying
Worked examples can be powerful when you study a skill. Instead of only reading the final answer, watch how each step is chosen. In math, notice why a particular operation comes next. In music, watch finger position and timing. In sports, notice body position before the movement, not only the dramatic finish.
Then move from watching to doing. Try the same kind of task without looking, compare your attempt with the model, and correct one difference at a time. This turns observational learning into active practice rather than passive viewing.
It also helps to choose models carefully. A fast expert may skip steps that feel obvious to them but are still new to you. A slower demonstration with clear explanations can be easier to learn from. Good observation is focused, not endless.
