Pitch is the quality that lets you hear one sound as higher or lower than another. It is closely related to vibration frequency, but musical pitch also depends on how your ears and brain interpret a sound.
What causes pitch
Sound begins with vibration. A vibrating string, air column, membrane, or vocal fold pushes nearby air and creates a repeating pressure wave. How musicians organise pitch
Western music names recurring pitch classes with letters such as A, B, C, D, E, F, and G, with sharps or flats for notes between many of them. The same letter name can appear in different octaves, so note names alone do not tell you the complete height of a pitch.
Scales arrange pitches in an ordered pattern, while intervals describe the distance between two pitches. Chords combine pitches at the same time, and melodies move through a sequence of pitches over time. These ideas all depend on hearing relationships rather than isolated frequencies.
Musicians also need a reference for tuning. Orchestras often tune to an A provided by an oboe or electronic source. Other traditions and ensembles may use different tuning standards or pitch systems, so pitch organisation is not identical across all music. To train your ear for pitch in music, compare two notes and decide only which is higher. Then try bigger and smaller gaps, and finally follow a short melody by noticing whether each note moves up, down, or stays the same. That simple listening habit builds a useful pitch map without requiring perfect pitch.
