Do You Need Perfect Pitch to Be a Musician? The Other Skill Matters More

Recognising the distance between two notes, rather than naming a note in isolation, is what musicians actually use. It can be trained, which the rarer ability largely cannot.
The two abilities
Absolute pitch is the ability to name a note heard in isolation without any reference, which is rare, appears to require exposure in early childhood and is distributed unevenly across populations and musical traditions. Relative pitch is the ability to identify the distance between two notes and to place a note against a reference, which nearly everybody has to some degree and which can be developed substantially by practice. The second is what musical structure is built from, since melody, harmony and transposition are all relationships between notes rather than properties of individual ones.
What the skill enables
The practical applications are extensive and mostly invisible to listeners:

How it is trained
The methods are well established and are a standard part of formal musical education. Interval recognition is drilled by hearing two notes and naming the distance, frequently supported by associating each interval with the opening of a familiar tune, which gives a hook while the sound itself becomes familiar. Singing intervals is more effective than only listening, since producing a sound requires an internal model of it. Chord quality recognition follows, then chord progressions, then dictation of whole melodies and harmonies written down from hearing. Progress is slow and steady rather than sudden, and the skill decays without use like any other.
The version singers need
Singers face a harder form of the problem than instrumentalists, which is worth separating out. A pianist finds a note by pressing a key and the instrument produces the pitch, so the skill is needed for reading and for musicianship rather than for production. A singer must produce the pitch from an internal model before any sound exists, with nothing to correct against until it is already out, and in unaccompanied ensemble singing the reference is only what the other parts are doing. That is why choral training concentrates so heavily on hearing a line before singing it, and why unaccompanied groups drift in pitch over a long piece, since small errors accumulate with nothing fixed to check against.
Why the rarer ability is not simply better
Absolute pitch is treated as the superior gift and has real drawbacks that musicians who possess it describe consistently. A performer reading music transposed into a different key hears a conflict between the written note and the sounding one, which can be genuinely disorienting. Historical instruments tuned to a lower standard pitch sound wrong. Some possessors find it harder to follow music that modulates, since they track absolute positions rather than relationships. And the ability says nothing about musicianship, since naming notes is not the same as understanding what they are doing. Many distinguished musicians do not have it and have never needed it.
