Elements of Art
Line, shape, form, colour, texture, space and value
The elements are the components an artwork is made of, and having names for them turns vague reactions into something you can discuss.
The unit covers line, shape and form, colour, texture, and space and value - the last being the one that does most of the work in making a flat image look solid.
This unit breaks down into 20 short steps and 119 questions, starting at difficulty 1 and building to 3. Below you can see exactly what it covers, how the path is structured, and worked examples with explanations.
- Steps
- 20
- Questions
- 119
- Difficulty
- 1-3
What this unit covers
- Line
- Shape and Form
- Colour
- Texture
- Space and Value
Where this fits
Follows Lines and Shapes. Principles of Design covers how the elements are arranged.
Where people slip
Shape is flat and form is three-dimensional. A circle is a shape and a sphere is a form, and the difference is what value and shading create.
How the unit is structured
Elements of Art runs as 20 short steps that unlock in order. 15 are practice rounds and 5 are challenge rounds that pull together everything before them. Questions start at difficulty 1 and climb to 3 as you progress.

- Fact or fibLevel 2
8. A contour line shows the edges and outline of an object.
Answer: True
Contour lines trace the outer edges and outline of a shape or object.
- Fill the blankLevel 2

- gesturecorrect
- contour
- straight
- broken
Gesture lines are fast, energetic marks that capture the action and pose of a figure.
- Match the pairsLevel 2
10. Match each line to what it looks like.
Answer: Zigzag line = Sharp back-and-forth points; Wavy line = Smooth up-and-down curves; Spiral line = Coils around a center; Dotted line = A row of small dots
Each kind of line has its own look, from sharp zigzags to smooth waves and coiling spirals.
- Odd one outLevel 2
11. Which of these is NOT a kind of line?
- Circlecorrect
- Zigzag
- Curved
- Diagonal
Zigzag, curved and diagonal are all types of line, but a circle is a shape.
- Put in orderLevel 3
12. Order these hatching steps from the LIGHTEST value to the DARKEST value.
Answer: A few thin lines far apart -> Lines drawn closer together -> Add a second crossing layer -> Many dense crossing layers
Adding more and closer lines, then crossing them, gradually darkens the value.
Shape and Form
- Multiple choiceLevel 1
13. A shape is flat and has only two dimensions. Which two?
- Length and widthcorrect
- Length and depth
- Width and weight
- Height and temperature
Shapes are two-dimensional, meaning they have length and width but no depth.
- Choose all that applyLevel 2
14. Which of these are geometric shapes? Pick all that apply.
- Circlecorrect
- Squarecorrect
- Trianglecorrect
- Blob
Circles, squares and triangles are geometric shapes with clear edges, while a blob is an organic shape.
- Fill the blankLevel 2

Answer: Circle = Sphere; Square = Cube; Triangle = Pyramid; Rectangle = Box
Each 2D shape has a 3D form partner - a circle becomes a sphere, a square becomes a cube.
- Picture questionLevel 2
18. 🔺 Look at this triangle. Is it a flat shape or a solid form?
- A flat 2D shapecorrect

Where these questions come from. Each unit starts as a plan of the concepts it should cover and the difficulty it should span. Questions are written against that plan with AI assistance, then checked by a validator that rejects anything without a single defensible answer, an explanation, or plausible wrong options. How we write questions sets out the whole process, and corrections are fixed in the bank and reach the site and the app the same day.
