Machines, factories and a changing world

For almost all of human history, nearly everyone farmed. Within roughly a century in Britain, and then elsewhere, most people did not - and that is the largest change in how humans live since agriculture began.

The unit covers steam power, the factory system, railways, and the social consequences: cities growing faster than sanitation, child labour, and the reform movements and unions that grew in response.

How the unit is structured
