Classical conditioning is a form of learning in which one event becomes associated with another. After repeated pairings, a signal that once meant little can begin to trigger a response on its own. The idea is simple, but the details matter if you want to tell true classical conditioning from other kinds of learning.
Classical conditioning starts with an existing response
Imagine that food naturally causes a dog to salivate. The food is called an unconditioned stimulus because it can produce the response without special training, and salivation to the food is an unconditioned response. The learning begins when a previously neutral signal, such as a tone, appears shortly before the food again and again.
After enough pairings, the tone can become a conditioned stimulus. The dog may salivate when it hears the tone even before food appears. That learned salivation is the conditioned response. Classical conditioning therefore changes what a signal predicts, not the animal's basic ability to salivate.
The terms can feel heavier than the idea. In classical conditioning, first identify the response that already happens naturally. Then find the neutral signal that becomes meaningful through pairing. This keeps you from memorising labels without understanding the sequence.
Timing and prediction matter
Pairing two events does not guarantee strong learning. A signal becomes especially useful when it reliably predicts what comes next. If a tone appears randomly all day, including many times when no food follows, it becomes a poor guide. The relationship between events matters, not just the fact that they occurred near each other once.
Conditioned responses can also weaken. If the conditioned stimulus appears repeatedly without the expected event, the response may decline in a process called extinction. The original learning may not be completely erased, because the response can sometimes return after time has passed.
Classical conditioning can also spread to similar signals. If one sound predicts something important, a similar sound may produce a weaker response. Learning to distinguish between similar signals is called discrimination. These patterns show that classical conditioning is flexible rather than a mechanical one-time connection.
Everyday classical conditioning examples
You can look for the same pattern in ordinary situations:

Classical conditioning is also different from operant conditioning. In operant conditioning, behaviour changes because of consequences such as rewards or penalties. In classical conditioning, the main relationship is between signals and events that they predict. A student studying because praise follows good marks is not the same pattern as feeling tense when a school bell has become associated with a stressful class. Keeping the two forms of learning separate helps you identify classical conditioning from the structure of the example rather than from the fact that learning occurred.
