Did Dinosaurs Have Feathers?

Many dinosaurs did have feathers, and the evidence is now strong enough that it has changed almost every serious reconstruction made in the last twenty years. Feathers were not a rare oddity on a few strange species. They appear across a large part of the dinosaur family tree, including some very familiar names.
How we know: the Chinese fossil beds
The clearest evidence comes from fossil beds in northeastern China, where fine volcanic ash preserved soft tissue in astonishing detail. Since the mid 1990s these deposits have produced dozens of dinosaurs with feathers or feather-like fibres still visible around the skeleton.
Some of these are simple hair-like filaments, sometimes called protofeathers. Others are branched, and a few are fully formed vaned feathers of the kind a modern bird would recognise. That range matters, because it shows feathers developing in stages rather than appearing complete.
Which dinosaurs were feathered
Feathers are best documented in the theropods, the mostly two-legged meat-eating group that includes birds. Velociraptor is now known to have had feathers, and preserved quill knobs on its arm bones show where large feathers attached.
Whether Tyrannosaurus rex had feathers is less settled. Its close relatives did, and a young T. rex may well have been fluffy, but skin impressions from adults show scales over much of the body. A large animal loses heat slowly, so heavy insulation may have been unnecessary in adulthood.
More surprisingly, filament like structures have also been reported in some ornithischians, a completely different branch of the family. If those really are related to feathers, the trait may go back much further than anyone expected.
What feathers were for
Flight came late. Early feathers were far too simple to lift anything, which means they evolved for other reasons first:
- •Insulation, keeping small active animals warm
- •Display, with colour and shape used to attract mates or warn rivals
- •Camouflage, breaking up the outline of a hunting animal
- •Brooding, sheltering eggs in a nest
We even know some colours
This is one of the most surprising results in modern palaeontology. Feathers contain microscopic structures called melanosomes, whose shape relates to colour in living birds. Some fossils preserve them well enough to compare.
On that basis, researchers have proposed that the small dinosaur Anchiornis had a grey body with a reddish crest and white striped wings, and that Sinosauropteryx had a banded ginger tail. These reconstructions carry real uncertainty, but they are evidence based rather than artistic guesses.
How feather fossils are preserved
Feathers almost never fossilise, which is why the Chinese deposits are so significant. They formed in still lakes where fine volcanic ash settled rapidly over dead animals, sealing them from oxygen and scavengers before decay could proceed.
Sites like this are called Lagerstätten, meaning exceptional fossil deposits, and only a few dozen are known worldwide. Their rarity is a caution as well as a gift. Most of what we know about soft tissue in extinct animals comes from a handful of unusual locations, so the picture may be geographically skewed in ways we cannot easily correct for.
