How Contour Lines Work: Reading Height and Slope on a Map

How contour lines work is easier to understand when you imagine slicing a landscape into horizontal layers. Each contour line connects points at the same elevation, letting a flat map show the shape, height, and steepness of three-dimensional land.

What a contour line joins

A contour line joins places that are at the same height above a reference level, usually mean sea level. The difference in height between neighbouring contour lines is called the contour interval. If the interval is 20 metres, one line might represent 100 metres, the next 120 metres, and the next 140 metres. Check the map key because different maps can use different intervals.

The spacing between lines is one of the fastest clues to slope. Lines packed closely together show that elevation changes quickly over a short horizontal distance, so the slope is steep. Lines spread farther apart show a gentler slope. This relationship is central because it lets you judge terrain without seeing a side-view profile.

Contour lines normally do not cross because one point on the ground cannot usually have two different elevations at the same location. Closed loops often show hills or depressions, depending on the map symbols. If values increase toward the centre of a loop, you are usually looking at higher ground. Reading the numbers prevents you from mistaking a hollow for a summit.

Recognising valleys, ridges, and peaks

When contour lines cross a valley or stream channel, they often bend into a V shape that points uphill. Water then flows in the opposite direction, downhill through the V. On ridges and spurs, the bends point generally downhill. These patterns take practice, but they become much easier when you connect them with the rule that water flows from higher elevation to lower elevation.

To practise, choose a hill on a map and trace a route from its base to its summit. Count how many contour intervals you cross and notice where the spacing changes. A path that cuts straight across tightly packed lines will be steep. A route that follows more widely spaced lines may be longer but gentler. This is the same information hikers and planners use when judging terrain.

Contour maps can also be turned into cross sections. Draw a line across the map, mark where each contour crosses it, and transfer those heights onto a side-view graph. Connecting the points gives a profile of the land. The result makes the map's hidden third dimension visible and helps explain why certain routes, watersheds, and viewpoints behave the way they do. Maps sometimes mark selected contour lines more heavily and label them with elevations. These index contours help you count upward or downward when many lines are crowded together. Reading contours becomes faster when you locate one labelled line first, confirm the interval, and then trace the neighbouring heights instead of guessing from the shape alone. This skill is useful beyond school exercises. Contour patterns help people plan walking routes, study drainage, compare building sites, and understand why roads often curve around steep slopes instead of climbing directly over them.
