Reading and using maps
Maps are arguments, not photographs. Every one makes choices about what to include, what to distort and what to leave out, and reading a map well means noticing those choices.
This unit is practical: grid references and coordinates, scale and measuring distance, compass directions, the symbols and keys that carry most of a map's information, and contour lines, which encode a three-dimensional surface as a set of loops.
This unit breaks down into 20 short steps and 120 questions, starting at difficulty 1 and building to 3. Below you can see exactly what it covers, how the path is structured, and worked examples with explanations.

Where people slip
Every flat map distorts something - area, shape, distance or direction - because a sphere cannot be flattened without stretching. Mercator preserves angles and badly exaggerates the size of anything far from the equator.
How the unit is structured
Map Skills runs as 20 short steps that unlock in order. 15 are practice rounds and 5 are challenge rounds that pull together everything before them. Questions start at difficulty 1 and climb to 3 as you progress.
