How to Read Latitude and Longitude on a Map

Reading latitude and longitude is easier once you remember that latitude measures north or south, while longitude measures east or west. Together, the two coordinates give a precise way to describe a location on Earth.
Latitude first, then longitude
Latitude comes first. Lines of latitude run east to west around Earth, but they measure how far north or south a place lies from the Equator. The Equator is 0 degrees latitude. The North Pole is 90 degrees north, and the South Pole is 90 degrees south. A location at 40 degrees north is therefore north of the Equator, not 40 degrees from the North Pole.
Longitude comes second. Lines of longitude, also called meridians, run from pole to pole and measure position east or west of the Prime Meridian. The Prime Meridian is defined as 0 degrees longitude and passes through Greenwich in London. Longitude can be measured up to 180 degrees east or 180 degrees west.
This order is the first rule for reading latitude and longitude. If you see 51.5 degrees north, 0.1 degrees west, the first number tells you the north-south position and the second tells you the east-west position.
Degrees, minutes, seconds, and decimals
Coordinates can be written in more than one format. Decimal degrees use a number such as 40.7128 degrees north. Degrees, minutes, and seconds divide each degree into 60 minutes and each minute into 60 seconds. Both systems can describe the same location, so check the format before comparing two coordinate sets.
In decimal coordinates, negative signs are often used instead of letters. A positive latitude usually means north and a negative latitude means south. A positive longitude usually means east and a negative longitude means west. For example, a longitude of -74 degrees is west of the Prime Meridian.
When reading latitude and longitude, do not mix a negative sign with the wrong direction label. Writing -20 degrees east would combine two different conventions. A map, GPS system, or school question normally uses either signed decimals or direction letters clearly enough for you to follow one system.
Use coordinates to narrow down a location
Start with latitude and find the horizontal line or band that matches the first coordinate. Then use longitude to move east or west until the two positions meet. On a gridded map, the intersection gives the target point. On a globe, the same idea works on a curved surface.
You can also compare coordinates to estimate direction. If two places have similar longitudes but different latitudes, one is mostly north or south of the other. If they have similar latitudes but different longitudes, they are mostly east or west apart. Remember that the physical distance represented by one degree of longitude becomes smaller toward the poles because meridians converge.
A useful practice for reading latitude and longitude is to pick familiar cities and estimate their hemispheres before looking up exact coordinates. Ask whether each place is north or south of the Equator and east or west of Greenwich. That simple four-part check catches many sign and direction mistakes.
