VO2 max is the highest rate at which your body can take in, transport, and use oxygen during intense whole-body exercise. It is commonly used as one measure of aerobic fitness, especially in endurance sports.
What VO2 max measures
During exercise, your muscles need energy to keep contracting. Aerobic metabolism uses oxygen to help release usable energy from fuels. As exercise intensity rises, breathing, heart rate, blood flow, and muscle oxygen use all increase to support the demand.
VO2 refers to oxygen consumption, and the word max refers to the highest rate reached during a demanding test. Results are often expressed relative to body mass as millilitres of oxygen per kilogram per minute. They can also be expressed as an absolute amount of oxygen used per minute.
This makes VO2 max easier to understand: it is not simply lung size or how hard you can breathe. Oxygen has to move through the whole chain, from air into the lungs, into the blood, through the heart and circulation, and finally into working muscle cells that can use it.
What affects VO2 max
Endurance training can increase VO2 max, especially in people who are new to aerobic training. Adaptations can include a greater amount of blood pumped by the heart with each beat, improved blood volume, and changes in muscles that support oxygen use. Training also improves many performance factors that are not captured by VO2 max alone.
Genetics, age, sex, body size, altitude, health, and training history can all influence measured values. Because relative VO2 max divides by body mass, changes in body mass can alter that number even if absolute oxygen use stays similar. This is one reason comparisons need context.
When learning about VO2 max, avoid turning it into a single score for athletic ability. Two athletes with similar values can perform differently because of movement economy, lactate threshold, skill, pacing, tactics, motivation, and sport-specific training.
How VO2 max is tested and estimated
A laboratory test usually increases exercise intensity step by step while breathing gases are measured:

- •A mask or mouthpiece measures the oxygen and carbon dioxide in your breathing.
- •Heart rate and other safety measures may be monitored during the test.

Field tests can estimate VO2 max from running, walking, cycling, or other performance data. Fitness watches may also estimate it using heart rate and movement data. These estimates can be useful for tracking trends, but they are not identical to a laboratory measurement and can be affected by the algorithm, conditions, and data quality.
If you are using VO2 max to follow training, consistency matters. Compare results from similar tests and similar conditions rather than reacting to tiny day-to-day changes. A gradual trend is more useful than one isolated number.
