What Were the First Animals to Live on Land?

The first animals on land were not the fish crawling out of water in the famous illustration. Small arthropods got there tens of millions of years earlier, and by the time the first four-legged vertebrates arrived, the land already had plants, soil and a working food web waiting for them.
The first arrivals, and when
The earliest solid evidence for land animals comes from around 425 million years ago, in the form of small arthropods: relatives of millipedes, mites and early spider like creatures. Some trace fossils suggest visits to land considerably earlier.
They could manage it because their bodies already suited the problem. An external skeleton supports weight without water and limits drying out, and jointed legs work as well on soil as on a seabed. Land was a difficult environment, but arthropods were pre adapted for it.
Plants went first
Animals could not colonise bare rock. Simple plants moved onto land before them, followed by mosses and then vascular plants with stems that could stand upright and move water internally.
Plants created soil, shade, moisture and food. By around 385 million years ago the first forests existed, which changed the atmosphere, the erosion of rock and the chemistry of rivers. The animals that followed were moving into a habitat that already worked.
How vertebrates made the move
Around 375 million years ago some lobe finned fish had features useful in shallow water: sturdy fins with internal bones, ribs able to support weight, and the ability to breathe air at the surface. Tiktaalik is the best known example, with a neck, a flat head and fins containing the bones of a limb.
The key insight from these fossils is that limbs evolved in water, not on land. Strong fins were useful for pushing through weed choked shallows and propping the body in mud. Walking on land came later, using equipment that already existed for another reason.
The problems of living on land
Moving out of water means solving several problems at once:
- •Support, because water no longer holds the body up
- •Drying out, requiring waterproof skin or a shell
- •Breathing air rather than extracting oxygen from water
- •Reproduction, since eggs without shells dry out quickly
- •Sensing, as eyes and hearing work differently in air
The egg that finished the job
Early four-legged animals stayed tied to water for breeding, much like modern amphibians. The decisive step came with the amniotic egg, which has membranes and a shell that keep the developing embryo in its own private pond.
That innovation freed vertebrates from water completely and led to reptiles, and from them to birds and mammals. It is one of the most consequential adaptations in the history of animal life.
The oxygen connection
The spread of land plants had an atmospheric consequence that mattered enormously for animals. Photosynthesis on land, combined with the burial of undecayed plant material, pushed oxygen levels up substantially during the Carboniferous period.
Estimates suggest atmospheric oxygen may have reached around thirty five percent, against twenty one percent today. Insects breathe through a system of tubes rather than lungs, and this limits their size in proportion to available oxygen. That period produced dragonflies with wingspans of around seventy centimetres, and their disappearance tracks the later decline in oxygen levels.
