Why phone galleries fill up

Most camera rolls are full of photos nobody meant to keep: screenshots taken to share something once, burst shots where only one frame was good, blurry attempts, receipts, parking spots and memes saved from chats. They accumulate because deleting them one by one through menus is slow and dull, so it rarely happens.

When a set of similar shots appears, keep the single best one and remove the rest; one good photo of a moment is usually worth more than ten similar ones.

Keep a steady rhythm and trust your first instinct. Undo brings back the last photo straight away, so an accidental swipe costs nothing.

Nothing is deleted until you confirm

Photos you swipe left go into a Trash pile, not straight off your phone. Review the pile in one pass at the end of a session, then confirm to reclaim the space. Even after that, deleted photos go to your device trash, where they remain recoverable for a while. Everything happens on your device; photos are never uploaded or shared.

Keeping a gallery tidy afterwards

Once the backlog is cleared, a quick weekly pass keeps the gallery under control. Deleting screenshots as soon as you are done with them, and choosing one favourite from each burst on the day you take it, stops the pile building up again.

Check your cloud backup first

Before a big clear-out, check whether your phone backs up photos to a cloud service, and how that service treats deletions. Some services keep the gallery on your phone and the cloud copy in sync, so a photo deleted from the device can also be removed from the backup after it has been in the trash for a while. Others keep cloud copies separately.

The settings of your backup service tell you which applies. If your phone and backup are synced, treat every confirmed deletion as permanent everywhere, and make sure important photos, such as family pictures and documents, are saved somewhere you trust before you start. A few minutes checking settings can save years of memories.

Where the space actually goes

Photos are usually not the biggest users of storage; videos are. A typical phone photo takes up a few megabytes, so a thousand of them might fill a few gigabytes. A single minute of high-resolution video can take up hundreds of megabytes, so a handful of long clips can use as much space as thousands of photos.

That means the quickest way to free space is often to review videos first, especially long recordings of concerts, screen recordings and clips filmed by accident. Keeping the best short moments and removing the rest can recover more space in ten minutes than an hour spent on photos. Screenshots and saved images from chats are the next easy target.
