How to Learn About Animals and Nature
The natural world can be learned as a catalogue - this animal, that habitat, these facts - and it is genuinely hard that way, because the number of animals is large and the facts have nothing holding them together.
With one idea in place it becomes an explanation instead. Every feature of every animal is either an adaptation to a way of making a living, an inheritance from an ancestor, or an accident. Once you are asking which, the catalogue turns into a set of consequences.

Read the body for the way of life
An animal's anatomy is a description of how it survives, and a surprising amount can be inferred from a photograph.
Forward-facing eyes indicate a predator judging distance; side-facing eyes indicate prey scanning widely. Teeth report diet directly. Limb proportions report speed, digging or climbing. Gut length reports how hard the food is to break down.
Practising this deliberately - looking at an unfamiliar animal and predicting its diet and habitat before checking - converts passive facts into a working skill, and it is exactly what the classification units are training.
Group by ancestry, not by appearance
The most common classification errors come from grouping by lifestyle. Bats are not birds. Whales are not fish. Both facts are about descent rather than shape, and both feel wrong the first time.
The underlying trap is convergent evolution: unrelated animals arriving at similar solutions because they face similar problems. Dolphins and sharks look alike because water imposes the same constraints, not because they are related. Recognising convergence is what stops appearance from misleading you.
Learn evolution before the detail, not after
Evolution is usually placed late in a course, which is backwards. It is the idea that makes everything earlier make sense, and having it first means every adaptation you meet arrives with an explanation attached.
The three things worth having precisely: selection has no goal or foresight, individuals do not adapt during their lives in the evolutionary sense - populations change in composition - and traits persist because they left more descendants, not because they are better in any general way.
Think in systems, not species
The interesting question about a species is usually not what it is but what it does and what depends on it doing that. Ecology is a set of relationships, and removing one participant has effects that propagate.
The rule worth knowing is that two species cannot occupy exactly the same niche in the same place indefinitely. One outcompetes the other or they diverge, which is why apparently similar species always turn out to differ on closer inspection.
Be careful about animal minds in both directions
Animal behaviour is the hardest area to study honestly because you can observe what an animal does and never what it intends, and the temptation to fill the gap with human motives is constant.
The error runs both ways, though. Assuming an animal feels what a person would is unjustified; so is assuming it feels nothing. Both are claims requiring evidence, and the second is often treated as the neutral default when it is not.
Go and look at something
This is a subject where fieldwork is available to anyone with a garden, a park or a window. Watching one bird for ten minutes teaches things no photograph can - how it moves, what it attends to, how it interacts.
It also fixes the scale problem. Most people can name dozens of brands and almost none of the species within a hundred metres of where they sleep, and that gap closes surprisingly fast once you start looking.
The most useful practical takeaway from the conservation material is that habitat loss dominates every other threat by a wide margin. Conservation that protects places generally achieves more than conservation that protects individual animals, which is not what most campaigning implies.
Start with the groups, then what they eat, then evolution. In that order the whole subject stops being a list.
