Neurons, the brain and the senses

The nervous system is a signalling problem: how do you get information from a toe to a brain fast enough to be useful, and how do you make a decision at the other end?

The unit starts with the neuron and the electrical and chemical steps that move a signal along it and across a synapse, then works outward to the spinal cord, reflexes, the brain's regions and the senses. Reflexes deserve close attention - they are the clearest demonstration that not every response involves the brain at all.

Where people slip

A nerve signal is electrical along a neuron but chemical between neurons. The switch at the synapse is where most of the difficulty lives, and it is also where almost every drug that affects the brain does its work.

How the unit is structured
