What Is Religion?

Belief, worship, community and the idea of the sacred

Defining religion is harder than it looks. Any definition built around belief in a god excludes traditions that clearly belong, and any definition loose enough to include them starts sweeping in things that clearly do not.

The unit covers belief and faith, worship and prayer, religious community, and the idea of the sacred - the distinction between things set apart and things ordinary, which travels further than any definition involving gods.

How the unit is structured
