How to Learn Geography
Geography suffers from a public image built entirely on its least important part. Ask most adults what the subject is and they will say capitals and rivers, which is roughly like saying chemistry is the names of the elements.
The subject is about processes: how land gets shaped, why weather does what it does, why people live where they do, and how those two halves interact. Naming things is the vocabulary, not the content.

Plate tectonics first, because it explains the map
There is one idea in physical geography that turns a set of unrelated facts into a system, and it is that the surface is broken into moving plates. Once that is accepted, the distribution of volcanoes, earthquakes, mountain ranges and ocean trenches stops being something to memorise and becomes a consequence.
The specific thing to learn properly is boundary types, because the boundary determines the hazard. Constructive, destructive and conservative boundaries produce different volcanoes and different earthquakes. Almost every hazard question is really asking you to identify the boundary first.
Learn processes as pairs of opposites
Physical geography is full of paired processes that get confused, and the confusion is what most questions are testing.
Weathering breaks rock down where it sits; erosion moves the pieces. Erosion and deposition both happen along a river's whole course, and it is which one dominates locally that produces the landform. Defending one stretch of coast starves the next one of sediment, so coastal management is a trade-off between places rather than a solution.
Getting these pairs straight is worth more than any amount of landform vocabulary, because the vocabulary follows from them.
Case studies are the subject, not the illustration
Geography exams reward specificity ruthlessly. An answer about coastal erosion in general scores poorly; the same answer naming a place, a date, a management scheme and its cost scores well.
The efficient approach is to learn a small number of case studies extremely well rather than many superficially. Two or three per topic, with names and numbers, will serve almost any question, and generic answers will serve none.
The two halves are one subject
Physical and human geography are taught in separate blocks and constantly explain each other. People cluster along rivers and coasts and on volcanic soil because those places have water, transport and fertility. Development patterns follow resources and climate. Migration follows both.
The highest-scoring answers are almost always the ones that connect the halves. Why do people live in an obviously dangerous place near a volcano? Because the soil is exceptional, and that is a physical geography answer to a human geography question.
Read maps as arguments
Every map makes choices about what to include, what to distort and what to leave out, and reading one well means noticing them. A sphere cannot be flattened without stretching something, so every projection sacrifices area, shape, distance or direction.
Mercator preserves angles, which is why it was used for navigation, and grossly exaggerates the size of anything far from the equator, which is why generations of people have a distorted sense of the relative size of Greenland and Africa. That is not a flaw in the map; it is a trade-off, and knowing which trade-off a map made is the skill.
Separate weather from climate and keep them separate
Weather is what the atmosphere is doing now; climate is what it does on average over decades. Almost all public confusion about climate rests on collapsing the two, in both directions - a cold week is offered as evidence against a long-term trend, and a hot day as evidence for it.
Neither is evidence about the other. They operate on different timescales, and holding that distinction firmly is the most immediately useful thing this subject teaches.
Geography is the subject most likely to change how you read the news, because so much of the news is about where things are happening and why there. Supply chains, migration, drought, urban growth and energy are all geography before they are politics.
